Can you help me with the "guilties"?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

Yesterday my son Brett (5) was diagnosed with pink eye. Of course they gave me drops to give him and of course he wouldn't take them. My DH is away for a week (great timing) and I think Brett didn't think I would push it. I tried everything and then fed up, I forced it. I basically just got him down on his back, put the bottle of drops in my mouth, straddled him and put my knees on his arms. I took the drops out of my mouth, unscrewed the lid and put the drops in. All the while he was screaming and thrashing but I got them in. He calmed down after that but Mom didn't lol! I felt terrible and didn't hardly sleep. He took the meds this morning before school but I'm at work now and still wondering if I somehow traumatized him or will have child services after me lol. Please help me with your feedback. Thanks.

Haha That is exactly how I used to brush my daughter's teeth! It's a necessary evil, I'm afraid. Don't worry about child services, they've got better things to do than go after a mom who made their child receive an important medication. You'd get in more trouble if you just ignored his pink eye and didn't make him take the eye drops. You did what you had to do to ensure your child's well being. That's what a good mother does. =)

Definitely stop feeling guilty! If you didn't treat it you'd be in even more trouble, I had to do this with my daughter when she was 8 months old. Hopefully your son has figured out this is a non negotiable, and just accept the fact that he's going to get eyedrops for the next 10 days!

Your son has an infections. You did what you had to do. He is not physically harmed. Emotionally, he just learned that there are things that are NOT negotiable with mom--that was a good lesson for him. STOP FEELING GUILTY!
