My 2 year old is extremely coordinated, but does not sit down long enough to learn his abc's, numbers, shapes or colors. He is an extremely talented ball player at his little age but I just cannot get him to sit down long enough to learn anything. I have even made a learning wall in my house with his abc's, numbers, colors and shapes! Am I doing something wrong as a parent? How do I get him to learn when he does not want too?

Kids develop in different areas at different paces, my son knew his alphabet and was speaking sentences at 20 months, he however is not coordinated and lacks fine motor skills. His 2 1/2 year old sister can do things that he can't because she has the motor skills but is just starting to learn the alphabet and counting. When we teach her we don't sit her down and teach her we try to make it fun, like singing the alphabet while brushing teeth, or counting the stairs as we climb them.

He's two. He's not ready to learn his ABC's as he is learning co-ordination and social skills. Don't rush him, keep the learning wall and when he is ready he will show interest. Continue with the physical activity because that is an important step in preparing him for mental learning. You may not realise this, but physical co-ordination has an impact on how well kids learn to read and write, so at this age keep up the physical activity to increase his co-ordination so that when he is ready for intellectual learning he can hopefully do it with ease.

I agree with the other ladies. He's only 2, let him be a child. He will spend enough years sitting down having to learn things so there's no need to be so structured this early. Like Amy suggested, sing songs while doing other things, get him to count how many things you need for everyday things and he will pick it up.
