So my sons dentist said that because one of his cavities is so deep, he needs a silver cap. As a mom, I feel absolutely terrible! Is this normal?

I realize he's a child, courtney, but there's a difference between it being a baby tooth and an adult tooth. If it's a baby tooth, can't they just pull it, save you the expense, and let the adult tooth grow in on schedule?

Because trust me, the pain of the pull is not even going to compare to the pain of the cap prep. Pulling the tooth is a one shot thing. A cap requires at least one prep appointment, and then another to put the cap on, neither of which is painless.

Ok well obviously he's a child.... And I feel like I would rather not put him through the pain of getting a tooth pulled. It's a baby tooth so it'll fall out in a couple of years. But if I leave it alone and do nothing at all, it will eventually get infected.

Ok, here's something I've always wondered: Is it his baby teeth, or adult? If its baby teeth, why do you have to waste the money to cap it (and believe me, it's not cheap), when it's just going to fall out anyway? Ask your dentist for an honest answer on that, and unless he can give you some medical reason that can be verified, I'd not cap it.

Granted, my kids didn't have this problem, so I don't really know, but I have wondered, when a see a kid with a mouthful of silver on their baby teeth...?
