What reason did the doctor give your for starting the Celexa? Is this doctor his pediatrician or a psychiatrist? In a recent study done on kids taking celexa there was no proof that it lessened repetitive behaviors related to ASD and there was a significant amount of complaints about the side effects. The children on Celexa were more likely to suffer from apparent side effects such as diarrhea, insomnia, hyperactivity and repetition of movements, than the placebo.
In my experience as a school nurse, I find some docs order it because it has a liquid formulation that is easy to give and the dose can be adjusted quickly because it leave the body more readily than other meds for behavior.
As a parent you want to talk to your doctor and get the answers to any questions about why he chose this medication and what is the goal in giving it? If you are not confident this is a good choice for your child, seek a second opinion.
