When is a good age to buy a cell phone to a child?

My kid got a basic phone, only able to call home, my cell, dad's cell, and 911, in middle school. If they wanted more than that, they had to pay for it. Took a huge hit out of the "gotta have it" argument when they had to foot the bill.

Whatever age YOU need them to have one depending on your circumstances. I know kids as young as 6 that have had one and kids that are in mid-teens and still don't have one.

In our home... my girls were 10.5 (starting middle school) to get one to share because that was the age they started riding a bus and needing to be 'on their own' a lot more than when they were in elementary. They are almost 15 now and actually share their phone (flip phone... basic talk and unlimited text) w/ their best friend... and they call themselves the triplets. lol My 'baby' is 8.5 now and unless our circumstances change he will also get one before starting middle school... though he'll be a bit over 11 when that happens.

I gave my oldest her first cell phone when she turned 11. I would say maybe an age of 11 or 12, but that's just my opinion.
