Cell Phones

At what age are kids getting cell phones these days? We are having a hard time with my step-daughter whose mother thinks it is fine for a 6 1/2 yr old to have one. Then when she is with us, she wants to do nothing but play and be on the phone. My husband and I both feel 61/2 is too young and not needed in any way. We both feel that 13 yrs old, at the earliest, is more reasonable. Comments please.

For us, the decision to give a phone coincided with the discovery that pay phones do not exist any more.

Ours are all prepaid phones, no plan, no overages of minutes, no problems. We still have the same technology as the high priced "contract" companies, without the high bills, and headaches.

That being said, not before they are allowed to go out and about on their own. If you allow your child to bike all over town at the age of 8, then that is a good age. If you wait until they are older, then whenever they get a little more freedom is a good age.

I cannot see the necessity of a 5-7 yo having one, as (in most cases) they would never be in a situation where an adult wouldn't be immediately present, or at the very least, close enough that they could use that phone.

My niece got one just a little while ago. She's almost 8. My question is WHY? She's always either with her parents, grandparents, or at school. I can not fathom a single reason this kid needs one. She has a cheap phone with a cheap plan, but still... WHY? ;)

My oldest got one (basic cheap plan and cheap phone... does nothing, but call and text.. NO games and NO internet) right before starting middle school because twice a week she has to walk and meet me somewhere instead of riding the bus straight home. It became a need for US at that point, so we could communicate if I am running late (happened just yesterday).
