Ok I just noted that the title says you have an adult child with autism. It is not likely that you will get a court order for support from his father. At least the SSI may help to defray costs.

Andrea, have you tried checking out Legal Aid for your county? You might be able to find a sliding scale or even a pro-bono attorney. At least you could get a consultation?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have researched this issue and found helpful information in lawbooks for everyday people?? CCP 3910 - I would love to connect with a mom who has tried this in California. I need to learn how to do this myself because attorney fees are not really in my budget. I would like to learn the best way to effectively communicate the facts.

Depends on the circumstance, you can file the petition yourself. You ask the county clerk for the forms, fill them out and file. If dad is agreeable, then you can negotiate a support order with him, write it up and have the judge review and sign it into a legally binding agreement. If he is going to fight you then I'd advise a lawyer.
