So many people have told me not to eat chocolate during my pregnancy, something about the chemicals in it. I am just over 5 months and a chocolate finatic, can anyone explain this to me?

When I was pregnant, I had this HUGE craving for Blue Bell Dutch Chocolate ice cream. Mmmmm soooo good lol. I ate a lot of that stuff haha. As far as I know, it's the caffeine in the chocolate that people are talking about. I remember looking something up about the amount of caffeine in chocolate and it wasn't all that much. Just eat it in moderation & talk to your doctor if you are concerned. But, like I said, I ate chocolate during my pregnancy & I have a healthy 11 month old son. :)

i ate chocolate loads whilst pregnant, didnt know it was bad for you. i would say, if your body is craving something, it means you need the nutrients that is in it. dark chocolate is better for you than milk chocolate.

all the best. xx

Chocolate contains caffeine which may hurt your baby. No, it's not a wive's tale it is reality. When I was pregnant I figured if it wasn't necessary for life (I don't me being a fanatic but REALLY needed for life) I avoided it. I didn't want to take any chances of hurting my baby. Besides, it just empty calories for you and your baby.

That sounds like an old wives tale gone awry. Don't eat a ton of it, of course, since it can cause you to gain too much weight. But enjoy your chocolate! And tell those "people" to shut it, or you'll unleash the pregnancy hormones all over them. In public.

i ate a ton of chocolate during the first trimester - craved it more than ever. i ate it the whole pregnancy- he came out fine.

Eating chocolate during pregnancy was recently linked to a reduced risk of preeclampsia and gestational hypertension (high blood pressure). So, that's a good thing! Of course, it's still high in calories with little nutritional value and does contain caffeine so you probably don't want to eat too much. I like dark chocolate best. It contains a large number of heart healthy antioxidants.

i've never heard this. the only thing i can think of is maybe these people think this because chocolate naturally contains caffeine but caffeine is safe in moderation during pregnancy. a pregnant/breastfeeding mother can have up to 200mg daily without it having any effect on baby, and chocolate contains way less than that.

I've never heard not to eat chocolate. It may be because of the caffeine, not that it has much, but combined with any other caffeine you have, it may be too much. I pretty much ate anything and everything while pregnant. I ate lots of chocolate. I'm a chocoholic! If I were you, I'd talk to your OB about it and find out what they have to say.

i craved chocolate during my pregnancy, so i had a piece of chocolate every, i had also heard of this "it's not safe to eat chocolate" thing and asked my ob about it. he told me that it was always the caffeine in choc that people were told not to have...however, choc doesn't have very much caffeine in it so it's not so much an issue, but just remember that if you're still enjoying a cup of coffee that the caffeine can add up quickly...he also told me that there have been recent studies that have been done that actually shows choc helps reduce the chance of preeclampsia (?sp)..
