What age did your baby start to climb out of the crib? did you keep them in the crib and just shut the bedroom door or gate bedroom off? or move them to a mattress on the floor so they don't get hurt?

My son is a real climber - steps, boxes, couch, me -anything he can climb. He hasn't figured out how to climb out of his crib - YET. he's almost 11 months old. His bedroom is upstairs and he doesn't go down stairs well - just up them. i'm thinking i should shut door or gate now in case he climbs up and out one morning.

my son is 16 months hes been climbing out of his crib for the last three. it has been very hard and trying for us because we switched to a toddler bed so he wouldnt get hurt and he refuses to stay in it throughout the night. he wakes up three times a night where when he was in his crib he slept through the night. we eventually emptied his room of anything dangerous or breakable and now it is only his toys and bed and that seems to work better, because i know that he will be ok i dont feel the need to go console him or keep fighting with him to get back in bed. he will sometimes cry at the door for a lil bit, but even doing that seems to be fading out then he either moves to the floor with his blanky or back to bed.

it's nigh on impossible to gate the stairs at the top - it's just a spindle and the wall. i think we can put one across the outside of his door and that's it. i'll have to check out that mesh screen. it's spindles all across the upstairs hallway. my daughter just yelled mom when she woke up and i came and got her. she wasn't sneaky.my son is! :)

Yes, I would put a gate up.We use one that swings open so it doesn't have to be taken down everytime. My son never climbed out of the crib. When we moved him into a big boy bed we put a gate up because I just don't trust him LOL. Since you have stairs I would also gate them up, one at the top and one at the bottom. Good luck.

My son was 1 1/2 when he starting climbing out of the crib. For his safety we turned the crib into a daybed and put up gates (the ones with smooth plexiglass, that he couldn't get teh traction needed to climb over them) I put the gates up 5 inches from the floor so that he had an even harder time trting to climb over. Just in case he got over we put kidproof knobs on exit doors and the stove. Our dog barks when he walks towards the living room (the way to the kitchen) so I was aware of most of the goings on.

I agree with the Moms who said to put gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. if you have a banister that he could climb over there is a mesh screen that you can buy for that as well. Try going to www.onestepahead.com for the mesh screen.

I would just in case. My son has been climbing all over the place since he was about 11-12 months but he's 18 months, 80% for height and he still hasn't climbed out of his crib. Climbing out of a crib is a lot different than stairs, boxes, chairs, couches and tables. Like I said though, a gate wouldn't hurt, I'd hesitate on closing the door in case he does get out, the door will muffle the sound, because he'd most likely not come out of the crib gently. Good luck.
