My son will be 1 month old on the 12th. I've had to switch from breastfeeding to formula (unfortunately) and during this change he has become constipated. Yesterday, he maybe got a dime size out, then today maybe a quarter amount. What is the suggested number of times to give karo syrup for constipation? Can I do it multiple times in a day or once a day? How does that work?

You can put few drops of prune juice in his bottle. Again, talk to the doctor. Since it is the weekend, you may not get an answer until Monday. I would bicycle his legs. Lay baby on his back on your lap and hold his feet, move his legs like he is riding a bike, every now and then push his knees to his chest. This helped my son pass gas and poop. I do think you are dealing with constipation since his poops have been small and hard.
If this was me; and I am not a doctor, I would add a tsp of prune juice to the next bottle. Then give him some time to poop and get things moving. If no result, repeat with 1/2 tsp in the next third bottle. So prune juice in one, then none, none, and then if no result half tsp in the third. Now, this is just mom advice. If you can get hold of you doctor, even better.

In the meantime, make an appointment with your pediatrician. Just to be sure. Ok?
And just small amounts of prune juice... that is mom to mom, I am not a doctor so I can't advise you for sure. I do think a few tsps of prune juice over the next 24 hours will help and not harm your baby. I have four kids and every now and then we bust out the prune juice for this reason. Resist the urge to use more than a tsp the first feeding and 1/2 after that.

Pasty poop is like thick toothpaste. Yes, iron can be very constipating and if you had to switch from breast fed to formula, the formula likely has iron in it, so that can back him up for sure. He will adjust, it just may take a few days (week). The color is not important. He will poop less with formula than when he nursed, but he will get used to it. Just little bits of prune juice should help things along. The warm bath and massage are both great ideas!

It is in small amounts, very small, and like a really thick paste. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ADVICE! It's been so helpful. :)

I've tried sitting him in a warm bath to ease it, rubbing his belly, laying him on his belly, and gas drops.

But see I didn't know that iron would cause them to be constipated. And he is on Gerber Good Start Soothe and I just looked on the can and it says "with iron". So maybe that could be the reason? His poop has turned green as well.

My son was breast fed and still used to strain and get all red-faced and cry and then pass mushy poop

Yes, but what if he is passing is small and hard, the iron in the formula is probably the culprit. What have you done so far?

So when they are this little, it could just be them getting used to pooping and the formula? Any tricks for me on how to help maybe ease the pain?

When you have an infant this young you need to talk to the doctor about treating constipation. Usually a small amount of Karo or a tsp of prune juice will fix the problem, but at this age you really need to talk to the doctor and follow his/her directions. Sometimes babies strain really hard to pass stool and they aren't actually constipated. It does sound like your baby is, but to continue with Karo could cause diarrhea. Dehydration from diarrhea is more dangerous than constipation .
