Contraception Problems

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

I'm 33. Have 2 kids aged 3 and 2. We've decided that we don't want anymore children. I've had reactions to the pill, implanon and mirena. The only solution seems to be tubal ligation. My doctor is very slow to refer me because of my age. Has anyone had this surgery? I don't know what to expect. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks in advance.

I'd have my tubes tied, my DH had a vasectomy and has had a nightmare. He was black and blue from bottom of sack to nearly the end of the penis, and the size of grapefruit. He lay curled around icepacks and didn't move for 2 weeks. We had it checked and they said it was "slightly worse than normal", he went back to work after 3 weeks off, but it took 4 months until he was able to have sex. He's a pretty tough man and doesn't complain about pain, but I could see it in his face. We wouldn't do it again.

I had a tubal after a vaginal pregnancy and the only scar I have is about 1/2 inch inside my belly button. Very minimal procedure. I was in and out of surgery in about 45 minutes. The worst part was afterwards I was sore from the air that they blow into you because of needing to expand your belly, other than that, the recovery was not bad.

The only people I have known who have had the surgery have done it at the same time as a C-section.  I'm not sure, but I think it is major abdominal surgery.  I agree that it would be easier for your husband to have a vascectomy - I think it's even an outpatient procedure.  But I know that men can be antsy about that.

What about the Depo-Provera shot?  I did that for years both before and after my daughter.

What about hubby? It is a lot easier for them to have their tubes fixed. We should not have to take hormones for the rest of our lives either. I had some bad reactions to the pill after my secound. I am still waiting for my husband to make his appointment to have a vasectomy. I had a scheduled appointment to have a procedure that is supposed to be less provasive than a tubal ligation. This involves permantly implanting coil tubes into your fallopian tubes. It is big in Europe. The day before the procedure my blood work came back abnormal with the blood clotting numbers which required me to go to a hemotologist. I found out three months later that the complication was a minor one, but I decided I did not want to go through with this whole thing after all. I am still patiently waiting for my husband to see the light. I doubt that will happen any time soon. What ever you decide to do envolve your husband in the whole process. Maybe he will decide that you have been through enough, and it is his turn to step up to the plate? Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
