Conversations to have with young child about father's abandonment

10 days ago, my ex moved out of state. Before leaving, he told my 4 1/2 year old that he wasn't her father anymore and that he'd never see her again. I was witness to these unfortunate comments. He has made no attempt to call or facetime with her since. Last night she repeated these words and said "that means I don't have a daddy anymore". Then she said "if im really good he'll bring me a xmas present." This is breaking my heart. I was caught off guard and left speechless. I need suggestions on age appropriate conversations to have with her about her dad leaving without making too big a deal of it. He is emotionally unstable, unpredictable, anger problems, depression and issues of addiction. I have no idea when or if he will make contact with her again. I want to be more prepared to talk with her next time it comes up. I would also love any book recommendations on this topic. Thanks for reading:)
