Short version of the question: Is it possible to be pregnant but get a negative pregnancy test? Details below...

My baby boy is 7 months old. I have yet to get my period back, though I am nursing him (he's eating solids too) so I was assuming that was the reason.

the past few weeks/months I have been getting more and more pregnancy symptoms. . .My husband and I were not trying to get pregnant again, but I would not be upset if we were, obviously anything is possible.

First it was just being tired all the time, and it was getting worse and worse. even when my son would sleep well at night, and I did too, during the day I find myself utterly exhausted. that lasted about a month or so. maybe more or less, I am still more tired than I "should" normally be, even with a little one.

Next I started having to get up in the middle of the night to go pee again. last night I was up 3 times!!! I also had hot flashes yesterday which I never get. Normally I am most comfortable in the heat and hate wind on me, but I was enjoying the fan and ended up having to take a cold shower to cool down because I was so hot and sweaty.

I had lost my appetite shortly after having my first baby, and now it is back full force, including nausea if I don't eat every 2 hours (which I had with baby #1 also).

I'm thirsty all the time... and I feel like my belly has a little roundness to it. No one else would notice, but I am super skinny to begin with, so it's easy for me to notice every little change. I also have been having slight crampiness/ soreness on the sides of my belly the past few days- which i remember going through as my uterus stretched with baby #1.

crazy thing is, I feel something moving in there. which made me think i might be 3 months along or so. I felt my first early too because I'm so skinny to start with. At first I could just feel little movements insisde, but today I definately felt something with my hand pushing out at me, and then it went away...

Only problem... Negative pregnancy test. Not only today (june 1st) but also on May 9th I took one (because I was wondering about being so tired) and it was negative as well.

is it possible to be pregnant and keep getting negative tests? or am I not preggo? if I'm not what else could cause all this madness???

thanks!!!

You can have a negative "Home" test and be pregnant. Go to the Dr and pee in the cup and stop torturing your brain. If you're not pregnant, Dr can give you their prognosis. May God Bless you with whatever your prayers are.

I wouldn't get your hopes up based on not having your menstruation.
It was 6 months after my son was born before mine started back up again. Sometimes your system just needs a jump-kick to re-arrange the hormones again. You are also breast-feeding which also could be attributed to the missed menstruation.

I think the movement you are feeling are most likely phantom pains.
If you are taking test that are negative, chances are you are not pregnant.

Also, if you are convinced you may be pregnant, or want it bad enough your body will start to create sensations of pregnancy.

Talk to your doctor about it.

My mom was 5 months pregnant with my youngest sister when she found out she was pregnant - this was before the "pee on a stick" tests of course. Her doctor would not test her because when she had my middle sister they said it had damaged something to her (she had german measles when she was pregnant) and told her she was sterile. Mom insisted she was pregnant, finally convinced the doctor to do the blood tests and a pelvic and "surprise!" 5 months along.
If you really feel that you are pregnant but are coming up negative on the tests your best bet is to get the blood test and a pelvic exam done to confirm whether you are or are not pregnant.

I agree with the first two posters, go back to the doctor for a pregnancy test.

My mother took 4 ahpt of one brand and 2 of another. The 4 had a negative and the 2 told her positive. The bloodwork came back positive. Out of curiosity, when she was 8 months along with me, she took another one of the brand that gave her all negs and it STILL said negative. So yes, definitely get that bloodwork done!

It is very possible to be getting negative tests. I've heard so many stories of women being 4-5 months along and getting a negative test from the store. I would definitely go to the doctor and get a blood test done and an u/s. Good luck!

I have 14 yrs experience doing ultrasound! One thing about the blood test. You may get the basic (qualitative) which says + or - to pregnancy or you may get one called the "quantitative HCG". The later actually counts how much HCG is circulating in your blood stream. There usually needs to be a certain amount of HCG in the body before the pregnancy is big enough to be seen by ultrasound (even the vaginal scan method). Remember pregnancy starts out microscopic and ultrasound is not able to see to that degree.

So if your doctor is hesitant to do an ultrasound because the blood work isn't high enough, just ask that testing be done to figure out what is causing your symptoms. (Also, repeated blood work can be done if a miscarriage is suspected.) A CT scan would be better at detecting parasites if you are not pregnant.

Got the results of blood work today and they were negative for pregnancy... rather confused. I have an appointment to see a nurse practitioner on wednesday to hopefully get some answers or more tests done since all the pregnancy tests say negative... still having all the symptoms, and feeling flutters in the belly here and there...

Tuesday, are the Dr.s urine tests better than the at home ones? I figured I would just skip the urine test there because obviously the hormone is not showing in my urine, but should I give it a try while I wait for the blood test results?

I had the blood test today, but I probably won't get the results until monday...more waiting!

at this point if it is not pregnancy I will be floored. my belly is starting to stick out a little more in the front, and I feel little movements almost every time I eat or drink...

Planning to get an ultrasound once the blood test comes back (positive or negative) because obviously something is wrong if its not pregnancy, gotta figure out what it is.

possibly parasites and something else, but I have never had parasites this bad. I lived in the slums of an asian country for many of my teenage years, so parasites are not a completely foreign idea to me. i have had them and gotten rid of them before, but I have never experienced them feeling like this, or feeling this much movement in my belly from a parasite which is what's making me think it has to be pregnancy.

It sounds like a dr's visit is in order. After having a baby, you sometimes feel different kinds of sensations in your belly that you didn't notice before. Also, I didn't get my periods back for up to a year after some of my kids (I have 4). You might be showing symptoms of diabetes as well. Hope it's good news whatever the dr says. :)

sounds like you need to go to your doc. I have had a few friends in the same situation, one was expecting, another not just her body changing to keep up with breast feeding demands.

It is possible to have a miscarriage and not bleed. It's called a missed miscarriage because everything stays in there. If that is the case you would want to get the dead fetus removed or else it can fester and cause a bad infection in there. Hopefully this isn't the case! Good luck again.

Thanks for all the info and advice ladies!!! I have a blood test scheduled for tomorrow morning. We were not expecting or trying for another little one, but now that I have been thinking about it, I am really wanting it. I have thought about the "phantom pregnancy" idea, maybe it is all in my head, but I don't think that is the case because we weren't trying and I was not thinking about having another kid until DS is 2... so if it's not pregnancy I'm going to be left wondering what is going on!!! I didnt know you could get so many false negatives even late in pregnancy... learn something new every day! Normally when I saw the "stick" say negative I would have just taken it at that, but I feel so preggo I was floored when it said negative so I had to ask if that was possible. low and behold it is!!!

thanks again ladies, I will update after I get the blood work tomorrow.

When my first daughter was 4 months old, I missed a period so I went to the doctor where we got a negative pregnancy test, but still not convinced, he sent me for blood tests and low and behold, baby no. 2 was born 9 months later.

my sister inlaw NEVER had a positive test.and has 3 beautiful children. She has to have blood drawn at the Dr. to see if she's pregnant.

I'm trying to get ahold of my dr. but that is VERY hard to do at times...so hoping I get a call back soon!!!

don't you have to bleed to miscarry? I have not had any bleeding at all since the postpartum bleeding stopped. no period, no spotting, nothing! So miscarriage didn't even enter my mind. is it possible to miscarry without bleeding?

[deleted account]

Also, I thought menopause too when you mentioned the hot flashes...but that wouldn't explain the movement in your belly. If it wasn't for the movement you are feeling as well, I would almost say maybe you were pregnant and had a miscarriage at some point without realizing it. You can still maintain the pregnancy symptoms during the miscarriage process. Good luck again....get to the Dr. ASAP for some blood work and ultrasound.

[deleted account]

Don't waste any more time wondering...make a Dr. appt. right away. It's possilbe you could be pregnant and still receive a negative result. However, a lot of the symptoms you are explaining could mean something else as well. I've watched Dr. Oz a lot in the last few weeks and they could be signs of cancer, diabetes, etc. (not to freak you out). That's why it's so important to go see your Dr. ASAP...why are you waiting :)?!?! Good luck!

I would go to the doc. They would be able to tell you better. It is very possible to have negative home tests and still be pregnant, especially if you are not using your first urine of the day. The signs you are saying could still be any number of things though, so it is best to go to the doc and get everything ruled out. You dont even have to tell hubby anything, yet. Just say that you are going for a check up and let it be.

Thanks for all the help ladies!

I am only 21 so I don't think premenopause is the issue :P

I took 3 more tests between yesterday and first thing this morning one of which was "first response" and still all negative! I suppose I will have to go see the dr. I was hoping to avoid that since I have not told my husband anything yet. I just don't want him to be worried for no reason or think I'm going crazy. would rather tell him once I KNOW....

I have heard of woman getting neg test. I would make an appt with your doc and they will give you a blood test that will messure your hormone levels. Have you ever seen "I didn't know I was pregnant"? It's a show on TV and many of those woman take prego test and get negs results. They say for many different reasons. Go to doc's, if you don't, you'll drive yourself crazy that way if it's positive you can start taking care of your prenatel needs and if it's negative you can look into why you are getting these symptoms. Best of luck

[deleted account]

Yes, it happened to me. So I went to the Dr, who was doubtful and did a urine test that was negataive as well but at my insistence she did a blood test which was positive. I

I would suggest going to your doc and getting checked. They can do a blood test that will be much more accurate than the standard test you get at the drug store. They can also do a pelvic and that will tell them right away if you are or aren't preggers.

Best of luck either way!
