could it be that serious?

My 7 year old hasn't been himself lately. About a month ago, he started eating less which is incredibly odd for him. He is very tall and skinny, and eats more than I do most days (until recently) He had a stomach bug a little over a week ago, and still hasn't completely recovered. He's been comming home from school and just laying around instead of being his normal energetic self. He's even been going to bed on his own about a 1/2 hour early. Last night night he started walking funny and complaining his leg hurt. I just figured he pulled a muscle and would be fine by morning. When he woke up, it still was hurting him, and I saw a couple bruises. I asked him how he got them and he had no clue. Then when he came home from school today, he said it hurt even worse. Now, he's starting to cough like crazy and has a temp of 100.5. I gave some motrin and of course will be calling his doc first thing in the morning, but I decided to google all of his symptoms and the only thing that shows all of them together is leukemia! I'm absolutely terrified. I know there are other things that just may not be comming up in my google search, and I am by no means a doctor. I just can't fathom the thought of him having something so serious. Does anyone have any experience with this disease either your own child, a relative, friend, or yourself? Am I overreacting or could it really be that bad?

Stay off google and take him to see a doctor.

Whatever it is, needs to be addressed. The sooner the better. If it is a big deal waiting to deal with it makes it worse. I'd completly want to freak out if I were you, but I am not, so I can tell you, stay calm - keep your kid calm - get him in and take care of this .... let me know what the doctor says.

::hugs:: the waiting is very often the hardest part. Please know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers as you and the doc try to figure it all out.

Ditto JuLeah! When your child is sick w/ worrisome symptoms.... google is the absolute WORST place for you to be.

Bring him to the doc in the morning and get him checked out.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. No one wants to see their kids hurting. Let us know how things turn out. Wish I could send a hug but just know people care!!!

Oh no! Don't ever try to google diagnose! You will always get results for the worst possible case scenerio. You are not a doctor... and google... is definitely not a doctor. Your son's doctor is. So go see him.
There is no possible way you could diagnose over the internet. There are hundred and hundreds of overlapping symptoms. It's just not possible.
Go see your family doctor.

well, one test back so far. He doesn't have mono. We are still waiting on the cbc(complete blood count) and the epsteine-barr virus (the virus that causes mono).

I have to say I am as bad as you because as I was reading this post I thought the same thing. But on reflection it is more likely to be anemia if he is recovering from a stomach upset and not eatting properly is tired all the time and bruises easily. A simple iron tablet is probably all that is needed. Take him to the doctors and get proper advice to stop all this worrying. We mums are our worst enemies we think we can google and find out what is going on, no we can't we need to be medically trained. Take him to the gp and get some reasurance that he is just run down and fine and then you will sleep better tonight!

Thanks Holly and Nohblee. I'm trying not to jump to any conclusions, because honestly every time I even try to think of something like that happening to one of my babies, I get physically ill. We had parent/teacher confrences tonight, and his teacher even said she's noticed a big change in him. He's been looking pale and laying his head down on the desk alot through out the day. She said she was very glad I took him to the doctor today. I'm just praying it is anemia or mono. It's not that I wish anything on him, but everyone knows something is going on, those are just the easier ones to deal with.

I wouldnt jump to conclusions, my own common knowledge of the disease says alot of those symptoms do unfortunately point to lukeamia. I am not trying to alarm u though. I do hope he feels better soon. He may have a simple iron problem either too much or not enough, too much can often result in strange bruising. Unexplained loss of appetite etc. I would just wait and see what blod tests get back, but i would prepare myself if i were u. I am soo sorry you have to wait and im soo sorry if this is what it looks like.. I wish u all the best in the future and im praying for u and your little boy

Well, so far his doc did a rapid test for mono, and that came back neg., so then she ordered a blood test for it, and also a complete blood count, and a few other things. She said it may take up to 2 days to have everything back. Now we're just waiting.

Calm down. Take a deep breath and Relax.
There are a million other things that could be wrong with your son, and there is no reason to jump to scary conclusions. More than likely the kid is playing hard at recess and that is where both the bruises and the tiredness are coming from. Additionally, he could still be bouncing back from his stomache virus.
Rember, sometimes the internet is more scary than helpful. I'm sure your pediatrician will be abble to reassure you in the morning!!
