Could it be twins?

I have this nagging feeling that I am having twins and though the doctor tells me there is just one, I cannot shake it. I saw only one in the first ultrasound but sometimes the doppler machine picks up a double beat for just a second. My stomach is the size it was when I was 8 months pregnant with my son but I am only 21 weeks pregnant. I got my 20 week ultrasound done at 19wks 4ds and they only look for one but I feel like there is more going on in there. I feel like I have movement in two different spots at the same time. Either my unborn child is an octopus or he/she has help. Another thing is, we are unable to determine the sex because the baby is hiding its face and front of its body. The baby burrows itself towards the back of the same area. Twins run on mine and my husbands sides of the family, so it wouldn't be weird if twins were the case. I'm just so confused. Maybe I'm psyching myself out but the feeling is strong. Any suggestions?

I spoke to a lady on another site and she didn't find out she was having twins until she was 30wks pregnant. The baby was hiding and they just weren't looking for it. Of course there were circumstances that made it a one in a million situation. The babies' heartbeats were in sync at the time of her 20wk ultrasound. The odds of that happening is like 1 in a million...I know. I just have this strong feeling. I'm not a doctor so I could definitely be wrong but ultrasounds don't always pick them up so I don't feel too crazy for feeling this way. Thank you for responding. Regardless of how headstrong I am, your response did give me insight.

That's not too bad if you have an ultrasound scheduled, at least you can bring it up then and make sure they actually look for a second baby.

It's been about 5 months now since we found out it was twins, and still trying to get our heads around it! I was showing very early, but it didn't enter my head it might be twins, it was picked up on an early ultrasound. I'd been sent for one due to feeling ill and actually thought I was miscarrying. Little did I know!!

I used to know which baby was which when they were kicking etc, due to the position they were in, but now they are both head down, I don't have a clue!!

Good luck for the end of the month!! At least you'll know for sure one way or the other

I'm at a military base hospital and it's actually a bit less convenient for me. With my son I was able to schedule emergency appointments and push for further treatment if I felt there was an issue. Here, you're only able to get an appointment as soon as a month out. They have sick call from 8-9am in the mornings during the week but they do not authorize ultrasounds during these appointments. I've had a few issues with them giving me awkward due dates and scheduling appointments backwards, or having no recollection of scheduling them at all. Pretty scary when you think about the fact that they will be delivering your unborn child.

I have an ultrasound scheduled for April 30th. This ultrasound is a gender ultrasound since they were unable to see anything. Following that one is a May 7th ultrasound because the 20wk development ultrasound was a difficult one. The baby is VERY active. They weren't able to see the face or some of the organs. No cooperation from this kid. I'll be happy with just one baby. It's just a feeling. If I'm off...No biggie. Congratulations on your twins by the way. I heard they're a lot of fun. Are you noticing any patterns in the womb? (sorry. I'm long winded.)

Are you due to get any more scans before you give birth? Is it just recently you have been feeling there is more than one there, since you didn't bring up at the scan you thought there could be more than one

The ante natal care is different for twins, I'm scanned every two weeks as I'm carrying identical twins sharing a placenta, so it's important that it's identified if you are. But I don't know what to suggest other than pushing for another ultrasound. Even the heart trace things aren't great, I spent over an hour hooked up to the machine a couple of days ago, and both my twins found it quite easy to disappear off the monitor lol, wee pests

I was normal size in the first pregnancy but the size isn't really the issue, just a detail. Every pregnancy is different...I've heard that a million times. I've actually heard of a lot of people who discovered they were having twins after 24 and 30 weeks because the doctors weren't looking for a second fetus and the second baby likes to hide. I asked but I really don't know if anything except giving birth will convince me there is just one baby in here. That's how strong this feeling is. I know the odds that the ultrasound misses the second baby at 19wks is improbable but since it's not impossible, I can't shake this feeling. Thank you for responding so quickly. I appreciate it.

I wouldn't think they would miss a twin at a 20 week scan. They missed mine at an early scan when I was only about 6 weeks, but she was spotted at a scan at about 10 weeks.

Non-identical twins can be genetic, but only down the female line, so it doesn't matter that there are twins in your husbands family, he would only have twins if you were producing two eggs. Identical twins are not genetic, it's just a fluke thing that happens if the egg splits

Not sure what to suggest really, as an ultrasound is the only of really telling if there is more than one fetus. You could say your worried by your size, and see if they will look any further in to that. Were you normal size in your first pregnancy? I was bigger by 20 weeks than some people I know were full term with a single baby, and I'm massive now at 32 weeks

If a twin wasn't picked up in the ultrasound at 19 weeks I would say there isn't one. It's possible for the baby to move the hands and feet at the same time so that could be why you're feeling movement in 2 places. The double beat for a second could be yours and baby's.

I was bigger with each pregnancy earlier with each one because your body is already stretched and it's getting ready.
