Could starting solids cause more night wakings and nursings?

My baby is 8 months old and I started him slowly on solids after he was 6 months old.
I breastfeed and spoon feed him fruit and vegetable purees but I don't push him to eat. Most times he only wants a couple of spoons, other times he eats more,he never took more than maybe 4-5ounces (125ml). He also feeds himself whole rice cakes, banana, potato, broculli, avocado.
Since he started having solid food he started waking a lot more at night.
He used to sleep for 11-12 hours with several wakings to nurse but he never really opened his eyes, just went straight back to sleep.
Now he's sleepy around the same time as before but his sleep is very light, he wakes 3 to 4 times, opens his eyes and starts babbling, completely awake and it's difficult to put him to sleep again. He now spends the nights comfort nursing...
He also dropped a small nap in the afternoon. He now takes two one hour naps.
The nurse wants me to increase his meals to two and increase the amount to close to 8 ounces (250ml).
I'm afraid that would lead him to wean himself off the breast, but I would like to breastfeed him for as long as he wants.
I appreciate any ideas, thank you!
