Help! How long should they cry before you seek medical help? He woke himself up from his sleep at 9pm and has cried non-stop and it's nearly midnight. Not hungry, changed nappy, Calpol given, teething gel given, took downstairs and put telly on, checked all over, cuddled, patted - nearly 1 year old. What next?

Sounds like he's in severe pain. I'd at least call the doctor or nurse and ask them for guidance.

thanks all - rang NHS direct last night but it wasn't classed as an emergency so had to wait 2 hours for a call back, by which time, he'd fallen asleep. Looks like it could have been a tooth but he's never cried like that through teething. Will see how he goes xx

Yep agree with all the others - 3 hours is too long! In previous months when I have rung our Nurse on call line they have said 2 hours (and that was for a bub older than 1 year) is too long and to seek help. It doesn't hurt to go get your little one checked - better to be safe!! goos luck i hope your little one is feeling better soon!

You've done all of the routine checks for crying and it hasn't solved the problem. The next step should be seeking medical advice: Either call your doctor/pediatrician or go to your local hospital's ER. Bonnie is probably onto the culprit--an ear infection--and only a doctor can diagnose and treat that. Good luck!

I would definately find out what is going on. One year olds don't usually cry for that long unless something is up. Could be an ear infection maybe.

I agree with kate, 3 hours for a nearly one year old is a tad long. I would call a doctor, or a telehealth line, and see if they suggest an ER visit.
