My daughter just turned 12 years old and was hospitalized on her birthday last week for self mutilating behaviors. This was the first incident and it scared me to death! I always thought she was just a difficult child and it was all behavioral. Often others labeled her as a brat. She has extreme seperation axiety, low self esteem, general anxiety, and mood swings. I am shocked that I did not see this before because I am a speech-language pathologist for a children's hospital. Her behaviors are hightened when my boyfriend of one year is around because she can not share my attention. I should say ex boyfriend because that incident and diagnosis caused him to need a break. I would love to hear any suggestions on where to go from here. Is there hope for my duaghter's future? Will she be functional as an adult? What types of medications are optimal? I feel like I am the only one experiencing this.
