Daughter not sleeping in her own bed all nightmm

My 8 y/o stepson is much the same way. We keep the hall light on for him with the door open, and he has a nightlight in his room. We keep our bedroom door locked, so he must knock when he wants to come in. Most times, my husband will get up and put the boy back in his own bed, cuddle with him for a few minutes until he calms down, and then leaves him to sleep in his own bed. If it's near time for us to wake up anyway, sometimes my husband lets him climb in bed with us. Then occasionally on a weekend, we plan for him to sleep the whole night with us. Over time it has become less frequent that he will knock on the door, or he knocks so softly that it doesn't wake my husband up. If I wake up and my husband doesn't, I let the boy go back to bed on his own. It apparently wasn't important enough for him to knock more loudly. Maybe I'm being mean to do that, but I feel he needs to learn to go back to sleep on his own.
