My daughter is 3 and has only seen her father for about 5 months total her whole life while he was in her life he requested for her last name to be changed to his since he is not on the birth cert. I told him no because I feel like it is to late for her to be confused by changing her name. Also he has not seen her since April because he doesn't have a phone and I will not allow her to go 2 hours away with no form of communication and he was not willing to drive to his mothers to continue visitation. The other day she went to her grandmother s house(his mom) and came home saying her last name was Harris. What should I do about his family teaching her that his last name is hers when it clearly isn't?

Thanks I spoke with her about it and she just said that it was her sons familys fault basically. I just asked her to not encourage it because of it being confusing for her. Hopefully that will help.

BTW My Nan tried this with my daughter. I wasn't married when she was born, but gave her her Daddy's surname. My Nan would deliberately use my maiden name as my childs surname, I put my foot down and she stopped.

I would be making it very clear that she is overstepping the boundaries here. Your child has a name and what Grandma is doing will only confuse and upset her. Make it clear that if she continues to push the issue, her time with your child will be limited and she will be supervised by you at all times.

I would be stern with them and tell them if they continue to disrespect your wishes that you will have to limit contact with her to only under your supervision. Explain to them that she is too young and it is confusing to her.
