It just strikes me a little weird that in the beginning she always bad mouth him, and now she talks about him like he never did anything wrong plus she's been acting totally different towards me

If he really wants to be in his childs life then he will need to go back to court and explain why he now has a change of heart. He's the one that signed his rights away.
All you can do is be supportive of your wife. Hopefully your marriage is strong and you can trust her 100% because it is sounding like there is doubt on your side.

In that case, he has no rights. If he has always been a great guy, why did he sign away his rights?

BUT that doesn't mean that the children shouldn't know who he is.

As in, he signed his rights away legally? Through a court system? Or just didn't sign the birth certificate?

He's the child's biological father and he has rights. If she says no, he can take her to court to get visitation. In fact, if she withholds the child, he could apply for custody on the basis of parental alienation. It is in your partner's best interests to get court ordered custody for the children and include some visitation for their fathers. If their fathers choose not to exercise that visitation, that's on them, but at least she has established custody. As it stands now, if there is no court order, she possibly doesn't even legally have full custody of the kids.
