My son is 13 weeks and 4 days old... I have been breastfeeding and then my husband typically gives him 1 bottle in the evening when I go to work... His normal bowel movements are like a watery - diarrhea type consistency, which our doctor assured us is actually quite normal, so we have not been concerned... However, last night when changing his diaper, it was more of a solid paste... Is this normal?? Again, he is getting one, sometimes two bottles a day, but never more than that... I don't know what would have caused the switch... We recently traveled to Wisconsin, but I was able to pump at intervals as well, so he has not received anything different... He has not been introduced to any solids at this point either... Thanks!

are the bottles he is receiving formula, or expressed breastmilk?

if its formula, that is likely the cause. when a baby is exclusively breastfed, after the first couple of months they start pooping less frequently because the body efficiently uses everything in the breastmilk (pooping once a week is most common, but once every 14 days is also normal). the nutrients in formula are not absorbed as efficiently so they have to add more nutrients in than what is actually needed, sooo more gets turned into "waste." formula poop is thicker, stinkier, and harder to pass. if it is formula that he is getting, his body may have adjusted to the breastmilk and the thick poop you noticed may just be from the formula.

either way, i wouldn't bee too concerned at this point. if he seems happy, and comfortable then i wouldn't worry.
