Discipline my 15 month old son

I'm crying. How to do this? If I hit my baby on the hand, just lightly, he simply laughs and go on with whatever he's doing. It's like he doesn't understand what I'm doing. He pushes and pushes his boundaries. My husband works away from home and can't help me. It feels like I failing my child because I don't know how to guide ihim. I don't want to be too harsh, he's still a baby. But when and how do I start to discipline him. I'm a first time mother.

I'm struggling with this myself with my 2 year old daughter. Have you tried time outs? Also how do you talk to him when you are disciplining him? Are you firm or do you explain to him what he is doing is wrong? I've started telling my daughter that it "hurts mommys heart when you do this" and then I tell her that she has made my heart happy when she does something good and that is starting to help. You are definitely not failing your child! Every baby is different and they all have their own approach to discipline.
