Do or do not check in if baby is awake but not crying

Working on sleep training using the Ferber Method and I'm on Day 4. It is really working but one thing I'm not clear on is if I should always go in to check on baby after slotted time even if he is not crying but still awake (sitting up)? I feel like I shouldn't disturb him if he's not visibly or audibly upset...

I do not know what the Ferber Method suggests on that, but my theory it to leave them be. Over the years watching little ones I have found that if I go in and out of the room trying to get them to lay down I just make it harder on the both of us. I have found that if I just let them talk or play that eventually they do fall asleep.....that is just their wind down time. One thing that is fun is to have a baby monitor that you can listen to them on. You will heard some of the neatest conversations they have with themselves during that time. There are SO many times I wish I had a tape recorder! One thing I do do is to try to keep the nap times the same....so I try to lay them down about the same time everyday and then get them up the same time everyday.....no matter when they fell asleep. This helps to put their body on a routine. I do leave room for exceptions as life always has those.....so if they are not feeling well then I let them sleep longer, if it has been a busy couple of days and I think they made need that extra sleep I allow them to sleep longer. Or if I know we will be out later that evening and a little longer nap may be useful later in the evening I do that.

Thanks for getting back to me Sarah, I agree with you. I have been letting him "talk" to himself and it is pretty entertaining. FERBER recommends going in to check on baby incrementally to reassure them. I do this only if he is really crying. Tonight is night #5 and we have made huge progress. Baby has put himself to sleep faster each night. Thanks for your help!
