My son is a very bright boy, but he was disorganized and his grades in 8th grade do not reflect how well he could have done. Do those grades get sent to his future high school or can he just start off fresh? He was at a private school and he is now going to public high school.

Of course it does. A child HAS to have transcripts from their previous school in order to be enrolled in another one.

Going from private to public you 'might' need to request the private school send the transcripts to the public school (I'm not sure on this), but the public school will not allow your son to attend w/out those transcripts.

It is the child's school record. Of course it accompanies the child. As we've stated, colleges look at 9th grade (year 10) and up, but his complete school record will follow him to the HS level.
What's the problem? Did he fail courses that you are ashamed of? Every kid at one point or another has at least one grade that they're not proud of. Most of them move forward. So do their parents.

So, you mean that everything is in a file that gets sent to the next school even if I don't ask them to send it...? I just didn't realize.

The school will look at them for class placement, but they don't go on the permanent record for college. That starts in 9th grade.
