I would if they had liked it hehe. Fortunately, they prefer milk shakes and pizza over soda and candy any day. I've never told them to stay away from both though, but always remind them that "too much of anything is always bad, and for these dynamic duo in particular, it could ruin your teeth and makes it hard for your #2" :)

We don't keep pop and candy in the house. The kids have candy as a treat. It's fine if they get a sucker at the end of the meal in a restaurant or if they come home from a birthday party with some candy in a loot bag. Our kids generally drink water or milk with meals. They will have juice on occasion, not usually at home, but if we're out. They almost never have pop, but if we're at a family function or something and everybody else (including all of the other kids) are guzzling soda I won't insist that our kids can't have it. My big concerns with pop are the caffeine and the empty calories. If our kids are only going to consume 500 calories at a meal I don't want them blowing 100 of those on pop. Our kids are 3.5, 5, 7.5 and 9.

I let them as treats.. Meaning they are not kept in my house, if we are out they have pretty free range.. But at home I mix it with water lollies are a treat too as is dessert take away ice creams or Iceblocks or cakes etc.. Nothing is banned just not a everyday occurrence
And in the spirit of Jodie's comment, yes my kids also get told they can't have things because they are for Me.. Wine special chocolates it is just life, my daughter is dairy free and she just has to deal with sometimes not having what everyone else does, we do get her special treats that are just for her too and the other children can't have..

Well, Gena, I will drink a glass of wine in front of them too. Doesn't mean they need to feel they can have it. Big people's drinks ;) But I don't drink soft drinks at all, mostly I only drink water and occasionally juice anyway.

Not really. Never coke or any other caffeinated pop. A few times a year she's allowed things like Sprite or Orange Crush. She can have candy whenever I actually buy it, but that's only once or twice a month. She's 8 now and didn't get her first sip of pop until she was 4 (and that's only because the fair ground concession ran out of bottled water)

I did not let my kids have a lot of soda's when they were little even at six or seven. What soda's they did get had little to no caffine in them. You have to be careful what they get when it comes to soda. Watch the fruit flavored ones because what you think has no caffine will have it. Even some rootbeers have caffine in them. As for candy, my kids got it every now and again and most times would beg me to take them to pick out an apple in the produce section. That was something they did on their own. I wish you could have seen the pride in their faces when we got to checkouts and they had an apple in hand...smiles ear to ear just like a kid who got the candy they wanted and it was so much better for them. At Halloween when they would get a lot of candy from family and going trick or treating at those whom we knew, I would keep out some and freeze the rest; the next Halloween they still had the last year's batch in the freezer and not much of it gone.

When they got older they got to have coke or pepsi or other stuff a bit more often but they would always ask me for the fruit first.

My daughter didn't taste coke until she was 7!!! Come to think of it, my son thought mineral water and soda water was lemonade until he was about 6.....

i let my son have some sips if i am drinking a coke or fanta. I also let him have candy every now and then and he also loves chewing gum so he gets the sugar free ones.I guess every mom must know for them self if they let the kids have it or not.I know moms that would NEVER let the kid drink coke...but i dont see anything bad in having some every now and then

Occasionally, yes, in moderation I see no harm. With the older kids (16+), I have very little control over it these days.

For special occasions my son gets caffeine free sodas and juice. Personally, I think they are yucky unless they have good alcohol in them, so he doesn't see people drinking them too often, but he still ends up drinking at least one or two 8 to 12 oz servings a month. It's amazing how the stuff takes over!!!

I'm less strict on candy--I think it is fine to have candy every now and again, as long as the child usually eats a balanced diet. It is a special treat and still viewed that way by societal norms, whereas people drink sodas with meals now, and some people grab a bottle of soda every time they get into their car! It's no wonder our nation is obese! I don't want my son to think soda and candy should be consumed regularly, but there is nothing wrong with a treat here and there.

I started letting him have them sometime after he turned 4 years old and could understand moderation.
