My nephew was born with one kidney. He is also premature. The one kidney he has is not functioning and doctors keep telling my brother and his wife they are running test. They are now doing a genetic test they said does anyone know what options they may have. The baby is seven days old. I have been looking online trying to research infant kidney problem ect. and nothing is coming up. Does any one have any incite on this at all...

My daughter is 6 and doing great. I just keep her out of certain sports at school and after. I also remind her teachers to make her drink water (she doesn't happen to do this enough) and make sure she eats healthy. She saw a urologist the first few years and has a renal sonogram once a year to make sure it is growing steadily. She was checked to be sure she didn't have a reflux problem (where urine goes up into the kidneys before coming out...that introduces bacteria and causes urinary tract infections. She was on prophylactic antibiotics as a baby and toddler but we stopped them since she never had an infection at around 2. She started getting allergic to them because of ear infections. (She also had a 2 mm hole in her heart that closed up, so maybe get an echo cardiogram done as a precaution.) I had 2 vessel cord while pregnant and we think there are urological issues genetically in my family.

My nephew only has one kidney - the other shriveled up in utero... He is totally fine, but has been cautioned by doctors to not play contact sports unless wearing a kidney belt to protect it, and watch his salt/sodium intake. Doesn't affect him otherwise though!

My grandfather was born with only one! And he is 86 years old and has never had kidney issues.

No, but my brother only has one kidney. We didn't know it till recently, he's 19. He's fine, the other kidney is bigger than normal to compensate. I think he just has to be careful about drinking alcohol and stuff like that.
