All of my 6 kids only nursed on one side. I think it was because it was the more comfortable side for me to hold them on. So I nursed from one side and pumped on the other. It worked out great because I never had a lack of bottles for a date night with the hubby:)

My son preferred one side over the other. He still nursed off the side he didn't like, but it was much less frequent and for shorter periods of time. I went to a lactation consultant and she said it is actually best to allow the baby to decide when to switch sides, even if this means you are only nursing off one side. They will actually get more milk this way as they will completely drain the side they favor, then if they decide to switch will be more likely to continue nursing on the other side. Your breasts will regulate production and if one side is primarily being used then it will make enough milk for your baby. Somewhere between 6 & 9 months my son was solely feeding from his preferred side but the other still hasn't dried up!! (he is now 13 months) I never had to supplement with formula and I waited until he was just a few weeks shy of 6 months before starting him on solids.
The biggest downside is that I had one breast that was a whole cup size bigger than the other!!! Now that he's nursing a little less they are starting to even out again - so don't worry - it won't be permanent!
And on a side note... when I told my doctor (wondering if she would have another view on this) she said, "Ah! So he is showing likes and dislikes already - this is good! Just like how you probably always pick the same coffee mug. It's not much different!" I laughed so hard...
