Does anyone know if there is a connection between Apraxia and Dyslexia?

I have 7yr old twins who both have Apraxia of Speech. Both have "graduated" from speech therapy. One of the girls is doing just fine with her reading and spelling, while the other, who has more severe Apraxia, is not doing very well. She seems to mix up d's and b's, put sounds from the end of a word at the beginning, and not be able to recognize a word that is repeated several times in the same story. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a connection between Apraxia and Dyslexia. I can't seem to find much info. By the way, her teacher kind of dismissed my question when I tried to talk to her, but she also had no idea what Apraxia was. Thanks!

Yes, because they can, and often do exist together in some children. It is also not uncommon for children who had Apraxia and are doing well in reading and spelling to have significant problems in reading, writing, and spelling when they reach middle school.

The good news is there is a lot that can be done to help and now is the perfect time. If you are willing to put time in, you can accomplish wonderful things--not hard, just time consuming. I was a Dyslexia/Literacy Specialist for 25 years and now do volunteer tutoring and help parents out online for free. (Long story as to why there--) Anyway, you can e-mail me at bobbijean.mcdonald1@gmail.com. I'll help in anyway that I can.

Bobbi Jean-Thank you for validating that I am not crazy! I am actually in tears as I read your response! My daughter and I have been down a long road together since she was born and I am, and always have been, willing to do anything I can to get her the help she needs. I will definately e-mail you, as I have a few more questions!
