I'm glad things are starting to "shift" with your son. Personally I would continue giving him the the stool softener until he clears. It normally takes a few days of constipation to cause bad pain. Your son may have passed a little before he got the pain, but not completely. When you are constipated it can make you feel bloated and full and you may very well lose your appetite. Plus, once you are constipated, eating can just cause you more pain. Try to avoid giving him too many bread products, as bread is a very common cause of constipation. Try giving him fruit to eat as most young children that I know absolutely love fruit - naturally sweet and obviously healthy. Try mashing some veg up with the sweet potato and see if he eats that too. Just gradually introduce different types of food. Remember, milk can be very filling so how much he eats of "normal" food will depend on how much milk he drinks - perhaps reduce the milk, increase the food and give him water to drink. If he won't drink the water then, as Vickie suggested, put a little natural fruit juice in to flavour it. Good luck.

Within 3 weeks he has been introduced to Homo milk...i started slow, just with a Ounce or two of homo in a 8oz bottle, mixed with Enfamil, then we gradually went to half and half, then i tried full bottle of milk and he was fine,no spit ups or anything. and lately he hasnt eaten much food either,he isnt really interested in table food, the only thing i can really ge thim to eat is Home made sweet potatoes! i ended up giving him stool softner and he was able to pass some ,the only other changes in his diet is introducing things.too try and get him into eating meals.since i dont feel the cows milk is enough.

How long has your son been drinking whole milk? If it was quite some time before he became constipated then I doubt it is the milk that has caused it. Have you changed anything else in his diet? Try giving him natural apple juice - not the baby one. Plus, don't give him too much as this in itself can cause stomach pains (as can prune and pear juice). If the pharmacist has given you a stool softener then let him have it this time to relieve the pain and help clear the constipation then concentrate on possible causes once he's no longer in pain. If none of that works then I suggest taking him to see his doctor for something stronger as long-term constipation can damage the bowel and cause toileting problems when he is older. Good luck.

how old is your son? did you do it slowly or all at once?
before switching completely you could try half formula with half milk. also give more water. and half juice with water. use orange juice plus calcium instead of milk. Or try rice milk or soy.
