Does your child turn shy when you praise them?

My 2.5 year old can count by himself, if he thinks no one is listening. But as soon as I say good boy or something to him he turns shy and wont do it for me again. Is this normal? I mean when it comes to the potty or anything else he is soo excited and accepts my praise but when it comes to counting, he turns shy to me. I dont push him to count but I dont know what I am doing to make him shy away from the praise. Let me know your imput please and thank you!

My 3 yr old daughter does that as well. I hear her counting or singing songs, but if I acknowledge it she stops and won't do it if I ask her to. It seems strange to me but I'm sure it's a phase, I'm interested to hear other responses! :)
