Hi, I'm new to this so please bare with me. My son is 11 yrs. old and he has Aspergers, ADHD, anxiety and a little OCD. He is very smart and is able to attend mainstream school but does have a 504 plan in place. He's been on medication for ADHD for a couple of yrs. A stimulant and a non stimulant. Recently, about 4 months ago, he started generic Prozac for his anxiety. It has helped him quite a bit and he does seem more willing to be social and just relax about things more. I personally think it has a lot to do with his getting older, not so much the meds. I was so against putting him on medications but all those around me (school, therapist, family), seemed to find a way to convince me that my kid really needed the meds to function. I just wanted my son to be who he was and somehow just get therapy to help. I was just wondering if any moms have taken their kids off of medications and have gotten support from school or special groups on helping the child be who he is and function. My ideal solution would be, getting a huge house in the middle of nowhere with endless acres of land so my son could run and jump and release his energy whenever he wanted to. In today's life, moms work, raise kids, put dinner on the table, deal with non supportive or non understanding husbands, etc. There is so much to juggle that I feel there is no time to focus on what's really important like making sure my child grows up happy, peaceful, secure, and confident in his own skin. Although meds are helping, I don't like that he is taking them. In the end I just want to help my son, the best thing I've been blessed to have.
