my son is going into grade 2 and he's been really really struggling with reading. the teacher says sometimes he acts dyslexic and sometimes he acts adhd. she said it's like he zones out trying so hard to focus and do well that by lunch he's so exhausted that he can't focus anymore. he was born at 31 weeks at 5 pounds 10 ounces if that makes a difference. his dad is adhd.. but i'm no longer with him. my son will sit and read with you but it has to be one on one... he's hardly able to make out words like "jump" and the word "oh" really gets him because of the silent h. i don't know what to do with it. i'm trying really hard to work with him but it's frustrating. i do have a boyfriend but we don't live together so i'm alone 95% of the time. you have to tell him repeatedly to do something and it's like you have to make sure he's listening and give him one instruction at a time. he hates coloring, but he absolutely loves music and fixing things. he has the kindest heart and just wants to read and be with the other kids but he keeps having to be pulled aside. any advice or tips would be a life saver..... thanks in advance.

If you live in the US; you can have a whole spectrum of evaluations completed. Even if he does not go to public school, call the Dept of Special Ed and request an evaluation, Within 60 days everything from fine motor, social skills, cognition, hearing and speech will be checked by a professional. Then they compile the info and can make recommendations for services.

Sorry if it came across like that but my point was that without a proper diagnosis, no one can suggest how to help him.

while i appreciate the answer/advice you're really making it seem like i don't care enough to take him to get tested. being that i'm the only one around to take him into the doctor and my doctor books sometimes over a month ahead i can't just jump up and take him in. i have been taking him to different places when i can trying to figure it out but it's not just an open shut answer like you're suggesting.

How about you take him to the doctor and get him help. Get him tested to see if he does have either problem and then you would be able to help him properly.
Just guessing what he may have isn't helping him, he may need specialist help.
