Early puberty?

My daughter is 8 years old, has been growing in the 90th percentile since I can remember, has armpit hair and can get some serious BO! A friend of mine who's daughter is 9, told me her daughter started her period today!!!! What? I've worried my daughter may start her period early because she has always looked older than her classmates, now had armpit hair (she has dark hair, so it's visible) and for about a year has had some really rank BO. I made her wear deodorant every day last school year, especially on gym days. I don't want her to be made fun of OR smell. We have had a bit of a period talk with family member but I don't think she would be prepared if it happened anytime soon, I know I wouldn't be, I'm more of an awkward person when it comes to emotional change type of things. Thoughts?

It isn't unusual for a larger girl to get a period at 8 or 9. It certainly sounds like you need to have a talk with your daughter and prepare her for the possibility, especially as she has obviously already entered puberty (with the armpit hair and BO, that's a sure sign). She may not quite be ready, but you definitely need to talk to her.

I can totally understand why you don't feel ready for this - I have a 71/2 year old daughter, and am in no way ready, but she is one of the smallest in her class, and is showing absolutely no signs of puberty at all, so at this point, I don't need to be prepared for it yet, although she does need to understand about it, because she will have some classmates who may be entering puberty in the next year or two..

Good luck!
