He's never had this problem before this year (3rd grade). His teacher says he isn't a bad kid, but he doesn't pay attention in the classroom. His grades are As and Bs, with a C here and there. The teacher also said she'd write in his folder every time he wasn't paying attention and she dropped the ball on this, because he's been coming home from school with good remarks (I 'changed' his diet: no soda, candy, etc., between 1000-2000mg of fish oil, for focusing, blueberries, and a little bit of coffee in the morning. I REFUSE to have him on any meds.) I'm going to his pediatrician just to say I have, but he, in his own words, "hates school". :( His teacher argued with me about this. I think this is ridiculous!! I'm nervous about the pediatrician tomorrow! What should I expect?

My six year old was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I am not sure what state you are in, but in my state the school should be setting up evaluations with doctors free of charge to you if they honestly think there is an issue. Please remember that ADD/ADHD are neurological disorders. Your pediatrician should refer you to a child neurologist. My advice to you is to write down anything that you may have noticed about his behaviors and anything the teacher has noted. Remember, no one can 'make' you medicate your child, that is your choice. There are other options available such as cognitive therapy, etc. My only other thought is, if your son had some other medical issue (ADHD is medical, not behavioral) think about if you would medicate him then . Don't rule out any option until you get 3 or 4 opinions. You do not need to make any decisions now! Good luck, I am sure it will all work out just fine!
