Explaining Heaven and Hell..... WOW

Well... we don't go to church half as often as we probably should. I will totally admit to that.... but we used to go every Sunday.... my oldest remembers. Well at nearly 7... I somehow got wrapped into explaining heaven and hell.... and the conversation started with "what is a soldier".... not really sure how we got to the other part. She cannot wrap her mind around the idea that some people are mean.... in the sense of evil. Her biological mom was quite neglectful and abusive toward her... so she bases everything off of what a "bully" she was. So trying to explain evil and hell was quite a challenge... especially when she starts asking what the devil is... and why. She can understand heaven... and that it's a place of good... but she really doesn't understand the concept of hell... and I don't really expect her to. After all... she is only 7.It was very interesting... especially since I have never really sat down and thought about the idea that my kids don't really know what hell is. They know that when people die they go to heaven and that heaven is for people who are good. And that God created the world. Especially in a situation of prior abuse and neglect... she just can't imagine anything worse... and as far as I know... her biological mom may be a follower of the devil... I'm not going to argue with her about that. I have met her biological mother... only a handful of times when she had nothing better to do than show up for a court date now and then. Anyway.... I'm sure my 5 year old will question me soon enough... when my 7 year old tries to explain it to her... so anyone had to try to explain hell???? Because I have NO idea how to answer when my 5 year old asks!

Why do kids need to know about Hell anyway? My older daughter is 7 and she didn't even learn about hell in the Catholic school she went to. Just focus on Heaven and God being loving and forgiving.

Hell IMO is just a story that was made to keep kids in line anyway.

I think you did a good job. I probably would've said the same thing, that it is opposite of heaven and is a bad place, but then switch the conversation back to heaven. I probably wouldn't go further into the topic 'til middle school.

Hell is separation from God, a punishment for sin. Since your children are only 5 and 7, I assume that the amount of evil they have seen in this world so far is pretty limited so I can imagine if they can't comprehend anything that heavy. I wouldn't be too graphic with them, but hell is a real place and should be taken seriously. But, on the other hand, you don't want to scare them either.

I'm home school my children and we teach then about heaven and nirvana and reincarnation, all that jazz but we make a point to never bring up hell or that there is a negative, not only is it too complex it's also far too dark!

I completely understand guarding your children from the darkness but my son who is 6 came home from school telling me about a boy who got grounded from video games and killed his parents. It really bothered him deeply. He is in kindergarten and tthey are seeing and hearing things that 20 years ago as kids we didn't worry about. It is good that your children show interest in Christ but also know that Satan is real. Read about the little boy who was nine in Indiana and walked up the wall backwards to the ceiling fan in front of a nurse and a dhs worker, there are over 800 documented accounts of these things happening with 3 young children. We as parents have no choice to build a hedge of protection around our children but you definitely explain the good and the bad, heaven and hell bc they r both real and it's hard to talk about but just bc we don't want to doesn't mean that Satan doesn't get to our children also. It's a different era we live in and out children are exposed to unbelievable things, I work in a school system and I promise they hear and see scarier than talking to them about heaven and hell. I just explained it to my son but in a gentle way bc they already know there are bad people in the world and usually if they have been in church they have been taught about the devil too. Make sure they hear it from u though and know the truth so there are no blurred lines in what other people can tell them.

COMIS, Thanks... I try not to focus on the negative... even when she questions why bad things happened to her before us... we just respond with "but look how many people love you now". So.... hopefully she has dropped it until middle school! I believe in informed kids... but I dont' want her to think the world is all bad either... you know!

Thank you Liz. Unfortunately, I think she has probably seen (My 7 year old) much more bad in the world than any child should (considering her prior life). I tried not to be graphic at all... and just kind of said that it is the opposit of God and good. For bad and bad things. We talked a little about how people make their own choices to be good or bad. You know, I remember learning about heaven and hell at a very young age... but I just couldn't remember how it was explained to me... so I tried.
