Hi all, I'm looking for some advice and reassurance. My 2 year old had today be diagnosed with a lazy eye, squint and limited vision in one of his eyes. He's on a strong course of antibiotics and steroids to try and sort an ongoing issue with a sty and lump on the same eye, and has to wear an eye patch for 2 hours a day for the next 6 weeks. I was just wondering whether anyone else had experienced anything similar, and whether you have any comments advice that may help or put my mind at rest.
Thank you x

I had to wear an eye patch and glasses from age 2 thru 5th grade. My eyes always looked normal, symetrical. The patch did not correct my vision. I have never worn glasses since the 5th grade and at 35 have better sight than most of the people I know.
I took my children to optomotrist at 1 year old & again at 2. The dr. did not find anything wrong. Then for school physical the pediatrcian suggested doing an eye exam as part of the physical. My son was diagnosed with lazy eye at that time. It has been 3 years he wears glasses but never a patch. His perscription has gotten weaker each year and we hope that he will be able to be eyeglass free in a year.

Hi Helen,
It's good that he only has to wear it a couple hours each day, when I was I child that was the hardest part! I read articles that withearly detection it is usually correctable. If it is not corrected, your son will still be fine. I believe that even with my bad eye I still see just as well as others. It just maybe that I have a poorer sense of depth perception, but people are accustomed to what they know. Maybe the I cant accurately guage a distance in my mind but things have always looked that way to me. I am not clumsy and have always been a reasonably good athelete. Your son will do just fine!!

Hi Maureen, thanks for your reply. Hopefully they may have caught this early enough, and so with a few year of patches and glasses it can be sorted. Day 1 of the patch today and he enjoyed being a pirate for a couple of hours!! x

I think glasses will be the next thing, the doctor said today we would be under the hospital for the next 5 years to try and get this sorted. I'm just devastated at the moment, we only went in to get the lump on his eye looked at and came out with all the rest!!

My nephew had this at the same age. He ended up using a patch to strengthen his bad eye, and had (and still has to) wear glasses. He's 12 now.
