I seem to always fall asleep while breatfeeding. Almost 80% of the time DS falls asleep too. I feel bad because I fall asleep and do not monitor him as far as him staying awake and making sure he is emptying my breast. Since he falls asleep, is he getting adequate milk to fill him up? Or am I suppose to keep him awake? He is 10.5 weeks and we have been feeding on demand since we left the hospital.

Thanks. I will try the water. Since I am new at this and still trying to get a routine, I am exhausted due to the nighttime feedings. I do drift off then. I am very comfortable and know I would not drip him. Thanks for your concern.

The hormones that are released to cause letdown are actually sedating, which is why you probably fall asleep. I wouldn't be so concerned about his weight gain while he feeds, although ideally he would empty your breast to continue your milk supply adequately. What I would worry about it the potential of you dropping him or smothering him at your breast while you are falling asleep nursing. It does happen. What I found worked for me, and was great for my supply, was to keep a glass of water where I would nurse. I would sip on it throughout the feed. The cold water helped stimulate to keep me awake. It's also a great way to get some extra fluids in.
