I recently found out I'm 8 weeks pregnant with twins. I was drinking very heavily for most of that time. Did anyone's child (ren) get fetal alcohol syndrome from drinking in the first trimester? Any advice? Stories that ended positivley? So scared and unsure what to do. Please help!! Thank you.

Then you are doing what you need to do, Samantha, and you just need to stay as healthy as possible during this pregnancy. Continue as you are now. No one will be able to tell you if your child will or will not have symptoms of FAS, but generally, if you are trying to mitigate the damage, you're doing well.

Wow! I understand that i very well could have done damage. That's why I'm very concerened and why I'd like to talk to someone that went through a similar situation. Or speak with a mother that has a child with fas. I'm not drinking, getting prenatal care , and doing all the right things. Was looking for support. Thanks a lot.

Both my niece and nephew had FAS because their mother drank during first trimester.

What I don't understand is your unwillingness to believe that you may have done damage, regardless of how much you consumed and when you stopped. As these ladies have stated, NO LEVEL of consumption is 'safe'. Each situation is different.

You may be fortunate, and skim under the wire, and your kid MAY be fine. Or, your kid could have FAS and complications. You don't know, and you won't until the baby is born.

I know a woman who's mother had ONE drink her entire pregnancy... and the woman has severe damage from it. I also know someone who's mother drank heavily for a few months until she found out she was pregnant... and has no known impact from it.

Every story is different and there is no way to know the outcome of YOUR story right now. All you can do is make sure you don't drink again and see what happens. While there may very well be some damage done... try not to worry about it as there is no way to change the past and worrying will only cause additional stress and possible complications.

Yes. The alcohol will effect all the organs developing at the time you drank. Just like smoking and drug use there are not going to be two situations the same, so what happens with one mother is going to be different for the next. There will be effects from your drinking...especially if it was heavy.

Thank you for the response. I am getting prenatal care. I know it is possible. I'm wondering if there are any mothers who's children did get fas from first trimester drinking.

Yes, it is very possible. Stop drinking and get prenatal care. You will not know if your twins twins have FAS or FAE until they get older and are having developmental/behavioral issues.
