Fasting & Breastfeeding

Hello to all the mothers and congrats on your beautiful children :)

I am a first time mom!

I have a concern. I want to fast from dawn till dusk every other day. That in New York time is about from 530 AM to 630 PM, about 12 hours. If I do this, will my milk supply dwindle or decrease? Fasting includes no drinking or eating and household chores. As winter approaches the hours will get shorter, meaning it will be anywhere from 6 AM - 4 PM. Please advise me if you have any experiences with the above.

Congratulations on your little one! I am also a new mom, and have been breastfeeding my son for 7 months now! Fasting does seem like a bad idea while breastfeeding, however, if it is for religious reasons, I can understand your desire to want to do it. I think as long as you eat enough calories after sun down and before sun up, you should be able to do it. I would recommend talking to a doctor or lactation consultant also. Maybe you would consider at least drinking water, because hydration is really important, so perhaps you could make an exception for water. I have actually just started a really low calorie diet, because I am just not losing any weight, and while that is not the same as fasting, I did start taking an herbal supplement called fenugreek, to increase my milk supply. Even though I didn't notice a change in my supply from reducing my caloric intake, I thought I would just take it anyway to mitigate any affects my new diet might have. So you may want to look into something like that. If it is important to you, then you should try it, but be willing to eat something if you start to feel faint. Good luck with your new baby and breastfeeding, it is a wonderful way to bond with your baby. It can be challenging at times, and you may have times where you doubt yourself, but the reward of that special bond you will have with your child, and knowing that you have given him/her the best start in life far outweigh the difficulties. Again good luck, and enjoy your little one!

Why would you even want to? Like Dove said, fasting and breastfeeding really don't mix. Your supply will likely drop, and your baby will not be receiving proper nutrition from your milk anyway. Not to mention, you will probably become extremely weak from trying to feed an infant while starving yourself. Not a good idea.

Thanks for the response.

I do plan on feeding him 2 years, Godwillingly.

So what do you recommend

Sure... as long as you eat all night long. ;)

However many calories you need to supply YOUR body to function properly... you need around 500 more per day for your baby... and extra fluids as well. Fasting while breastfeeding is a really bad idea if you want to be able to continue breastfeeding.
