Fear of pooping at school

My soon to be 5 year old son is refusing to poop in the school bathroom. I'm not sure if it's a privacy thing, wiping thing or what? He usually tries to hold it until he gets home. But yesterday he had an accident in his underwear and was too embarassed to tell the teacher. So he waited until we picked him up to tell us. What can I do to help him not be afraid to go poop at school? We told his teacher about his fear but he still won't tell her when he has to go.

He likes when mommy/daddy tell him a story while pooping at home but we tried to stop doing that now that he's getting older. We have been teaching him how to wipe himself but he still wants us to finish wiping him. We read him a bunch of potty training books and they helped tremendously, are there any books about fear of public restrooms or going potty by yourself?

I had the same problem as a kid, and so do my kids. For me, it was about privacy. I still have a public fear, and will only go in public in extreme emergencies. Still, I will rather rush home and try to make it.

Maybe have him use the bathroom in the morning before going to school? Try to get him on a schedule if you can. It can be hard at that age.
