Fetal Stroke

Hello, all. I have a beautiful 3.5 month old baby girl who suffered a stroke while I was in labor with her. Sustained some brain damage, but so far, all seems "normal." Anyone else out there who has gone through this??? Thanks.

Hello, My son was diagnosed with having a fetal stroke as well. Cause is unknown. The neurologist says he has brain damage on both sides of his brain. I had a c section because I had no amniotic fluid left and the inducing wasn't working. He was born with seizures and was in the NICU for 10 days. The doctors put him on medication. He is now 8 months old and has weakness in his left arm/hand. He receives PT and OT and has been responding pretty well. It is a slow process. He has been clear of seizures since he left the hospital and is now being weaned off the meds. I feel it is a struggle at times for me because we don't know what the future will bring. how are your kids doing now?

Hello, my name is Sandy. i gave birth to a beautiful baby boy nearly 4 months ago now and he is a survivor of a left hemispherical infarct (left side stroke caused by clot). I was concerned after he was born that he was hypothermic and extremely irritable, with a high pitched squeal and he wouldn't feed. He was therefore transferred to another hospital in which he was admitted to the ICU neonatal ward for 14 days. He was put on medication to contain seizures if they were to occur and unfortunately after 11 days of being home, was rushed back to the hospital with severe vomiting and rash. We were then told that an allergic reaction had occurred to the medication. A week later and he was released again and able to come home.

At approximately 12 weeks of age he was reluctant to use his right arm/hand and has been put under intense physiotherapy which he hates! In the past week i have also noticed a decline in the use of his right leg.

Basically I was wondering if there is anyone who has an older bub with a similar story who could enlighten me as to how their development is progressing. I know every situation is different but i am just worried that my little boy may encounter more and more problems along the way.

Hi Mary Ellen!

Thank you so much for joinin the Stroke While in Utero group. Glad to see we're reaching many different ppl! :) I started the group because my son suffered a stroke within 3 weeks of birth. We noticed some twitching about 5 hrs after birth (I had a c-section), and we found out that he had the stroke, and the damage affected the back of the motor skills section of the left side of his brain (affecting the right side of his body). We were lucky enough to catch it so quickly (his twitching was actually seizures), and he is doing very well now. He just got off his seizure medication 3 weeks ago. I make sure I let all ppl in the group know they are more than welcomed to post their stories on the wall. I know when this happened to us, we felt so alone, like no one else has been through this. For something they told us was so common, we had never heard of it, nor had any of our friends and family. So hopefully you get to hear some other ppls stories, or maybe we can even learn more about this disorder from ppl posting more info. Glad to hear your lil girl is doin well, and hope it stays that way. :)

My son had a stroke as well. He's 4 now and still has some complications from it. His was right fronto-central, so it has affected his left side. We're working through it. =)
