Unless child is vomiting or has diarrhea, pedialyte really serves no purpose. Why did doc advise you to give it? I'd keep nursing. Fevers are the body's way of killing viral and bacterial infections and should be left unless over 101, or the child is terribly uncomfortable. Your milk has antibodies, calories and nutrients that pedialyte will never provide. Call you doc back and ask why he advised pedialyte

But you have a question... that you are asking here instead of asking the doctor. I wouldn't be giving a 4 month old anything other than breast milk (since I only breastfed) unless it was under direct orders and supervision from a doctor... so since you are giving your child something OTHER than his milk already... the doctor is the only one you should be directing your questions to. If the doctor is not answering your questions... find another doctor.

With just a fever (since that's the only symptom you mention) pedialyte seems completely useless to me in the first place.

If my 4 month old had a fever... I'd be asking the doctor all of my questions.
