Finger sucking.

Does anyone know a safe substance to put on my 2 almost 3 year olds fingers? She sucks her 3 finger at night when she goes to bed. I've tried a few different things to get her to stop. But I recently was told to try putting something on her finger that would taste bad to her. I'm just not sure what I should use. Any suggestions?

I would not put things on their fingers to make it gross for them. I find it to be cruel because you have not given her the tools to do without it.

The truth is she does it because it comforts her. She needs to slowly learn skills to help sooth her in other ways. First never tell her she can't do it or yell at her for it. That is going to make the problem worse. Instead praise her when she doesn't do it.

Point out that as people grow up they don't do it by showing her that her favorite cartoon character doesn't suck their fingers.

Tell her to let you know when she is ready to stop sucking her fingers and you will help her. Believe me, she will one day show up and ask for that help, when she is ready.

The honest truth is as much as you don't like finger sucking, she will grow out of it. Some times you just need to wait it out and be a support system.
