Hey fellow moms! I have 3 boys ages 1,2 &3. I've been working with my oldest son on potty training for about a year with very little luck. He has used the potty several times over the past year but its never a regular thing. For some reason he HATES to use his potty even though when he goes, he's very proud of himself. I've tried the reward system, candy, sitting with him and reading to help in relax, giving him a book and leaving him alone... So many different things and nothing is working! I've recently discovered that he has a problem with constipation and it hurts sometimes when he tries to poop so we go through a lot of diapers with "smears" in them because he tries to hold it. (sorry for the graphics! Lol) another thing is he has not yet peed standing up, only sitting. Does anyone have any alternative tips for me to try?? I would really appreciate any suggestions or feedback! Thanks mamas!

For the constipation...what you want to do is to make his stools soft enough that he can't hold them. It kind of is a cycle....it hurts so he holds it which then leads to it hurting more. I would first start with the natural ways to soften stools......bran, prunes, apple juice, bananas, etc. Also make sure he is drinking a lot of fluids.....milk is good, but too much can cause constipation, so you want to make sure he is also getting enough water in his day too. You will need to give it time to get into his system. If that does not work I would talk to your doc. My youngest struggled with this and did Miralax for awhile to help soften her stools. It works, but you will need to know the dosage for your son as it only states the adult dosage on the bottle.

For the peeing standing up I would not worry too much about that. If he prefers to sit you can teach standing up later down the road when he is more comfortable with it. A plus side to sitting is that it is less mess. A trick to working with them standing is putting cheerios in the toilet and having him do target practice.

Right now I would not push the potty training too hard until you get the constipation figured out. One thing you can do to maybe help with using the potty is putting a little potty out where he plays or watches tv......allow him to sit and play or watch tv. Then as he is starting to sit more often and use it more often then move it to the bathroom. If you can also try to do a routine......trying to go potty when first wake up in the morning, before and after naptime, before bed or bathtime.

Hello Stephanie!!

I had a hard time with my son as well. Just like your son, he would use the bathroom but it would never be consistent. I'm not sure if you are a working mom but I was and I had to talk a couple days off of work. Particularly, a Wednesday or Thursday so that you can have the entire weekend. When you all are in the house, I would put him on underwear of his choice. If you go to Walmart, Target, etc. There are some undies that are thick and there are also plastic undies that are made to go over the cloth undies to keep their clothes from getting wet. Try those. Every time you think about the potty....make him go. Try sitting the potty in front of the television so he won't be in such a rush to get up. Also, I would suggest cutting back on the liquids. My son didn't start peeing standing up until he was about 5. It gets frustrating for us parents but we MUST be consistent. Good luck to you!!!

I think that Carol Cline's ebook on potty training is probably the best advice I could give you on. I have used it myself with great results for my son. After months of trying to potty train him I found her ebook and it really helped. Her is the site I went to to get it:

Thank you so much! I have TONS of underwear and I think I have a few pairs with of the thick ones but I do need to get some of the plastic ones to go over them. I am a working mom too but when I'm not home my husband is so as long as he follow through with me we should be able to do it! Thanks so much!

Thank you so much! That was really helpful! I never thought to put the potty in front of the tv but, yes, I agree that we need to get the constipation under control first. You also suggested some natural things I haven't tried yet so thank you so much! 😁
