what do you do when your 18 month old throws huge horrible tantrums? i don't want to spank him unless its absolutely necessary.

WALK AWAY. Just simply walk away and ignore it. Spanking will just exacerbate the situation.

I either walk off and leave him have at it, if he is following me and hitting me I put him in his room until he's calmed down.

Well spanking will certainly work but I would try time out first. He is more than old enough to be able to do time outs.

Ignore them. Wait until he is calm to help him. I agree with Katherine, spanking a child during a tantrum will only make it worse. It's developmentally normal for toddlers to tantrum they lack language, impulse control and emotional maturity.
