I have about 5 friends that I consider "best friends". These are the people who I share everything with and spend the most time with. I've known them for 10-15 years (one I've only known about 5 years).
I also have a few dozen people that I consider "friends". These are people that I'll grab lunch with on occasion or pop out to visit on a birthday. Sometimes they are parents of playdate children.
My best friends are the people who have seen me when I was at my worst; they've picked my up off the ground when I felt like my life was falling apart; they've told me when I'm a bitch even when I don't want to hear it; they've encouraged way too much drinking on occasion and made my life miserable :) haha They share the good, the bad, and the really bad.
I don't think that it's abnormal to only have 3 real friends. You aren't going to have strong close relationships with dozens of people. That many people will just be around for the fun parts; the others are there for all parts of your life.

I can be me - they can be them - we encourage personal growth, but don't require anyone change - we fit, we click, we laugh .... Shay, three friends you can count on? That is amazing .... many you can go to a movie with, but three you know you can count on - cool
