Frozen breast milk....rotten?!

I had a pretty decent sized stock-pile of frozen breast milk (I have been saving it since December of last year). I have just realized that it is all sour after being defrosted and I am so upset about it. I put so much effort into saving this milk, and its no good. Has this happened to anybody else? Also, my son is 5 months old and his appetite is steadily increasing. I pump at work but don't think that I am able to produce enough to meet his demands now. The weekends are tough when I am home with him all day. Since I can't use the frozen milk.... do I have to start formula? I'm afraid to start the rice cereal with his milk because he can't sit up on his own yet.

I heard about this. Some people have extra um.. lipids? Sorry, I can't remember what it was. But this woman had pumped so much milk, she was all set and it was wonderful, but then it all wasn't good for her son to drink. She has a lot of lipids in her milk (again, not sure if that's right) which causes it to decompose much more quickly than normal. So it's all good when the baby drinks it straight from the source, but very difficult to store.

She ended up finding a solution that involved scalding or boiling the milk before or after freezing it. Sorry I don't remember more, but maybe that is enough for you to find her blog where she has all kinds of details and explains the way to get around the problem.

Yes. My bags are specifically for storing breast milk. The milk is fresh when it goes into the freezer and stays frozen until I take it out then defrost the bag in a cup of warm water.

You may need new breast milk freezer bags. Are you using something specifically for breast to freeze them in?

I am not producing enough during the day to meet my sons demands so I defrosted a frozen bag of pumped milk to give him that while my body produced enough for his next feeding. I had my suspicions about the quality of the milk once defrosted (we have no issues with it when we refrigerate it and give it to him within a few days of it being pumped) and I tasted the milk and it was sour. This seems to be the case with all of my frozen breast milk.

For future reference, only defrost what you are going to use when you are going to use it. I am guessing you had a power outtage and it defrosted, then refroze, and you thawed it. That certainly will make it go bad.

I would not add any cereal to his milk. It really is not nutritious and just succeeds in filling them up. If you cannot pump enough, you can supplement with just formula.

The first time I gave him the defrosted milk it made him sick with severe gas pains and diarrhea. This time, I opted to give him a more recently frozen bag (from 3/12/13) and it smelled off. I then tasted it myself and it was sour.

Why do you think it's spoiled? When breastmilk defrosts it seperated so the thicker portion settles at the top and the bottom looks more watery, it's not spoiled, just swirl it around and it will be good to serve.
