My four week old is fussy when she is awake unless we are holding her. I think she has gas and it's heart breaking to hear her cry. Is she too young to "cry it out" during her awake time during the day?

YES. I would highly advise AGAINST the "cry it out" theory because the fact is that it is most important to meet the needs of your baby, which will also build trust. I have spent decades reading about this and the professionals agree that in the first year of life, it is more important to meet the needs of the baby and not be concerned about "spoiling" the baby. In fact many say that it isn't even possible to spoil a baby in the first year because they need comfort and reassurance to thrive. It sounds like it might be a good idea to consult your pediatrician about her possible gas problem as there are safe products that can help with that, so I would call them asap.
I know this is a trying time. Newborns are very demanding so be sure to take care of yourself too and get an occasional break from those high demands.
Best of luck, and remember that it's our job to love and protect our sweet little ones. Be careful of the advice that you get.
Trust the professionals.
