Hi Kelly, Im a paediatric nurse from a gastro ward so believe me when i tell you, DONT give them flat coke, dont give them anything sweet at all as it draws water from the body back into the gut and makes the diarrhoea and vomiting worse! Just give them water or gastrolyte drinks(from the chemist) and give them small amounts often as their tummies cant handle large amounts at once. You can even give them 10mls every 10 minutes for a while. If they havn't had any wet nappies for a while you should probably take them to the hospital as it is a sign that they are pretty dehydrated. Good luck, gastro can be really crappy(ha!).

Hey, what a coinkydink: Comb, Combs; we're both nurses, I work in the adult GI clinic tho . . . started in the peds clinic!  I started to mention that sugar dehydrates because it requires water from the body to break it down but figured it would set off a firestorm that I didn't want to diffuse :D

when my kids suffered with Gastro, my doctor said, the first day only liquids (juice mixed with water, or just water), the second day I could give crackers (as many as they want to) and keep the fluids up, by the 3rd day they could handle plain toast and bananas. And not lactose at all until they totally fine otherwise it will come back.
It always worked with my 3 kids, so hope it works for u. If by the second days you dont see any change, take them to the hospital...

The dry diapers worry me my doctor tells me when mine are ill that they must urinate at least three times in a day or to bring them in to see him.

This is a really annoying condition! Can last from a few days to a fair bit longer bepending on how bad it is. Best thing to give to begin with is nothing but boiled water with electrolytes in it to stop dehydration. Then watery stewed apple, grated apple that's gone brown, and if that works, try a little mashed potato or dry toast. Fluids are the most important thing they need. They can dehydrate really quickly.

Hi Kelly

Well, I reckon 4 days of loss of fluids is quite alot. My 2 year old has quite a strong tummy, but when he developed gastro and wouldn't eat,I have noticed that making a little white rice in decaffinated tea - in South Africa we use Rooibos - and sweetening it a litte with honey, helped to bind his tummy and it tastes nice. Over - boil the rice so that it's almost like a pudding. It may work for u too. xx Nicoletta

when my kids were small and had this problem my doctor told me to feed them bananas and flat coke. for some reason they can keep this down and it replaces their electrilites. hope this helps
